"How The Sea Got Its Salt" Once upon a time, long long ago, there lived two brothers in the land of Kugnae, at the edge of Dae Shore. Their names were Yin and Yang. They had always been very different from eachother, since they were young. Yin had settled into a cozy house at the north end of the seashore, with his wife and children and was very wealthy. He worked in the day as a Spy, doing several odd jobs and receiving much gold for his evil deeds. He was selfish beyond belief and if there was anything he didn't have, he wanted it! On the other side of the shore, Yang resided in a tiny shack that he himself had built. He also lived with his wife but the great difference between him and his brother Yin, was that he was considered a peasant by his neighbors. He had no job, as nobody wanted to hire a poor man, yet he had the heart of gold and made his living by scavenging for acorns and rabbit meat. Yin hated his brother Yang since he had no reason to like a poor man, whether it was his own blood brother or not. He would tease him and dress in his finest robes when he would pay Yang a visit. Yang did not mind this, as he thought everybody had their own outlook on people. He remained positive throughout their long brotherhood together. One night, Yin was on the way to his brother's house to bring him some rice to eat, as they were nearly starving! As he was approaching the door, he overheard Yang's conversation with his wife. He spied through the window, as they spoke. Yang had taken out some sort of vase, which he presented to his wife: "Darling, an old man in the wilderness gave me this vase in exchange for some rabbit meat to eat!" said Yang. His wife looked confused and asked what they will use it for. "This vase is magic," said Yang. He continued to explain that when you say "Start!" to the vase, it starts producing salt within itself until you yell out "Thank you!" to make it cease. As soon as Yin heard that the vase is magic and that you must yell "Start!" to make it produce something, he ran back home to tell his wife. He must have this magical vase and find out what treasures it spurts out! So, that night he plotted to go to Yang's house to steal his new magical vase. As Yang slept, dreaming of the new business he would start selling salt at a cheap price, Yin climbed in through the window and stole the vase. He had to make a getaway before his brother found out that his vase was gone and met his wife at the seashore that night. They got on a small rowboat and rowed and rowed until they were in the middle of the ocean. "I cannot wait any longer!" yelled Yin. He had to see what treasures the vase would spew out. So he yelled, "Start!" and the vase quickly filled with salt, and overfilled with salt, and filled the whole boat with salt! "Salt?! Ah! How do we make it stop?" yelled Yin's wife. Yet, Yin had not listened to Yang's whole story on how to work the vase, and could not stop the salt from forming! Yin and his wife screamed and begged the lamp to cease. "Stop!" "Finish!" "End!" Yet nothing would work. That night, a long long time ago, Yin's boat sank to the bottom of the sea. And there it lay, under the sea, for thousands of years, still not stopped. Right next to it lie two poor souls who could not conquer their greed. And that is how the sea got its salt. -Viky | |
